RUTAS PROVINCIONALES 83 i 73

JUYJUY ARGENTYNA

Out of the whole range of serpentine roads this is one of my absolute favorites – let’s say: a strong top 5.

Very few people, even among Argentinians, know that to enjoy the entire eastern stretch of the Andes, you don’t need to venture all the way to Bolivia’s Camino de los Yungas. You can take an Andean pill right here in Argentina – in just 1–2 days – winding along RP83 and RP73, from the clouds of Callilegua, through the entire Yungas*, all the way to 5thousand peaks.

The Yungas region – a biosphere stretching from Peru to northern Argentina, along the warm eastern slopes of the Andes, acting like a kind of gateway between jungle and high mountain – gives these roads a truly unique character.

Thanks to high humidity, intense seasonal rains, and often unstable terrain, the roads through the Yungas can be wild, unpredictable, and dangerous. You’ll often come across the infamous Yungas DERRUMBESSS (landslides) – so yes, there’s adrenaline, that deep life-affirming thrill, and a real sense of satisfaction.

Plus, these roads lead to remote, hard-to-reach places – far from the usual buzz of civilization – and that's what makes them even more captivating.
